What Are Infrared Digital Photographs?

The sensor (the part that records the picture) in your digital camera is sensitive to visible light and also to ultraviolet and infrared light. This would give your pictures an unnatural color so the camera manufacturer installs a filter that blocks ultraviolet and infrared light from reaching the sensor.

We have had this manufacturere's filter removed from a camera and replaced with one that blocks visible and ultraviolet. This filter only allows infrared light to reach the camera's sensor. We have used this modified "infrared camera" to take theses photographs in the Cottage Grove area and also in California.

The most obvious effect is that plant leaves look white. This is because they reflect infrared light very strongly.
